You could try searching craigslist, but chances are that you will still need to spend close to $1,000 for the quality you want. You may need to search individual cities by hand, but start with the film centers such as central Los Angeles and Manhattan, NY. You can sometimes find someone who needs to get rid of a good camera quickly and are willing to take a decent loss. Most projects in Los Angeles will be completing in the next month or two, so now is a good time to start looking.

Most people who submit to film festivals use professional level camcorders. Some actually do well with whatever consumer level camcorder they can find. It does not matter what camera you use as long as you find the right one for your distribution format, editing ability, story line, and regional format (NTSC, PAL, ... ). Your budget, filming abilities, lighting conditions, and scene location will also be factors on what camera you choose.

Film Festivals are about your story and your ability portray the story the way it should. Many film festival fans actually prefer to hear about some great story shot on common everyday equipment. It shows a lot of creativity and original though on your part as well as makes the audience feel that they could one day do what you did. There are hundreds of camera models with thousands of feature combinations available. It should not be hard for you to find what will fit your situation.

Certain scenes from 'The Blair Witch Project' required a view from a small hand-held consumer-level camcorder. A small miniDV camcorder was purchased from Circuit City and used for several days. After the filming was complete, the film crew returned the camcorder for a full refund.

We have used the Panasonic Pro AG-DVX100B 3-CCD MiniDV Proline Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BYJFYW?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000BYJFYW and the anasonic Pro AG-HVX200 3CCD P2/DVCPRO 1080i High Definition Camcorder with 13x Optical Zoom (16GB P2 Included) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00126FN5S?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B00126FN5S . We owned the Sony Professional HVR-A1U CMOS High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ENON1A?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000ENON1A , and we now use the Sony HVR-V1U 3-CMOS 1080i Professional HDV Camcorder with 20x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IF8NNS?ie=UTF8&tag=motionpicturecentral-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000IF8NNS . Each camcorder had their good and bad points depending on what we were filming.<br><b>References : </b><br>
