I can’t believe people are STILL moaning about Blu-ray being “too expensive.” Just how cheap do you think it SHOULD be? 50 cents for the movies and 5 bucks for the player???
Let’s put things in perspective…AGAIN. But this time seeing how things have changed over the past 2 years. And the past TEN years.
Check out this Best Buy online flyer from 1999 to see how little DVD prices have REALLY changed:

Cool video man…. …
Cool video man….sounds like you know your stuff. They are starting to sell pretty cheap blueray discs at Wal-Mart now days. I just got Robocop for $10! It’s an old movie with no special features, but I did notice a few different scenes that were extra (don’t know if it was just blueray) but that made it totally worth it for me….but yeah with the new movies and all special features that come with it, the price isn’t bad at all. Great rant dude.

I haven’t seen a HD …
I haven’t seen a HD rant lately, are you done with the HD rants part 2?
P.S I saw a spider-man trilogy box-set for Blue-Ray for 65 dollars. I think that’s pretty reasonable, don’t you?

Wait! I messed up, …
Wait! I messed up, Planet of the Apes, (My favorite movie of all time) has been put on Blu-ray which is from Fox. But c’mon! Star Wars and Alien!

20th century fox …
20th century fox really needs to pick up the pace with blu-ray. Their 2 great sci-fi sagas, Alien and Star Wars have yet to be released. C’mon, Star Wars and Alien would look amazing in Hi-Def. Star Wars would be a huge incentive to upgrade! The only good Fox sci-fi to be put out on blu0ray so far is Predator, with didly squat extras. But of course you know all about that. lol

Hi Sean, today I …
Hi Sean, today I went to a store here in Switzerland: they had *way more* DVDs than Blu-rays on sale and the bargain bins were just DVDs. Then, I looked at the price of Blu-rays: yes, they are now cheaper, more or less as cheap as DVDs a few years ago (around 30 CHFr, 19 €)!

By the way, $89.99 …
By the way, $89.99 in 1988 had about the same buying power as $163.94 in 2009. Could you imagine paying $164 for a movie on a crappy VHS tape?
Keep in mind that VHS tapes had *no* extras – no commentary tracks, no making-up featurettes, not even chapters. The quality was vastly inferior to that of DVD, to say nothing of Blu-ray. Most movies included a couple of trailers for upcoming releases, but that was about it.
People complain too much.

This is from a …
This is from a Miami Herald article published on September 23, 1988, listing videos for sale on VHS:
RECENT MOVIES: Vice Versa (PG, 1988, RCA/Columbia, $89.95); School Daze (R, 1988, RCA/Columbia, $89.95); Switching Channels (PG, 1988, RCA/Columbia, $89.95); Zelly and Me (PG, 1988, RCA/Columbia, $79.95); The House on Carroll Street (PG-13, 1988, HBO, $ 89.99 ); Masquerade (R, 1988, CBS/Fox, $89.98); Illegally Yours (PG, 1988, CBS/Fox, $79.98); High Season (R, 1988, Nelson, $79.98)

I work at one of …
I work at one of those electronic stores and it just drives me nuts. Example: lady walks in and is looking for Princess Bride (one of my favorite movies I might add) The new anniversery edition is $14.99. . . it’s on sale for $6.99 and she flips her lid because it costs so much. Also are people BLIND at least every week since Blu took over we have had sales of at least 1/3 if not more of the Blu section on sale for, at times, $14.99. HOLY CRAP!! people need to wake up. Love the rants as well.

As for the TV’s, …
As for the TV’s, you can now get 40″ 1080p TVs for about the same price as what a decent 28″ flatscreen CRT TV used to go for. So don’t tell me it’s not affordable. It’s almost at the point where it costs EXACTLY THE SAME as everything else. You people seem to have no problem bargain hunting for DVDs, but then you ONLY look at new releases on Blu-ray and use THAT as the price comparison? Ridiculous. There’s plenty of deals to be had on both, for ALL income levels.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:24 am
You say LD and BD …
You say LD and BD is for “rich people?” Come on, that’s ridiculous, and again you contradict your own point. I was far from rich when I collected LD, but saved up for the titles I really wanted. I had to be more selective, sure, but I was still able to collect them on even my meager income at the time. A new release on Laserdisc was around 60 dollar for barebones, 120-200 dollars for a deluxe edition. Blu-ray 20-40 dollars, depending on where you shop and what it is. Not even close.

Actually, DVD was a …
Actually, DVD was a transition form BOTH VHS and Laserdisc. I don’t just compare them based on poularity, but also comparative quality. My point with that should be pretty obvious – While it was an AMAZING upgrade to go from VHS to DVD for most people, for those of us who wer einto Laserdisc it wasn’t. That didn’t stop DVD from taking over. The same thing is happening with Blu-ray now. I’m just putting things in perspective for people who don’t “get” that this type of format switch isn’t new.

i have seen ur …
i have seen ur videos where u talk about laserdisc…how can u compare dvd.-bd transition to laserdisc-dvd transition. The transition was from vhs to dvd not from laserdisc to dvd.I know laserdisc is much better than vhs but laserdisc was not the official ” mass ” format. It costed something like 100 dollars per disc! In Europe there was even no sign of LD…. LD was for rich people ( let me saY ) like you… And so is BD… Come on… not ALL people can afford a 50″ to appreciate it….

I agree with …
I agree with Candidmark, at least Zaranyzerak is passionate about what he does his videos about! I dont get why people watch a video just to criticise the whole meaning of the video =/ lol.
Also “Bwayne641″ read before you stereotype someone as American, it says “Canada” on his profile. Its like calling me Chinese when im clearly English.
Keep up the rant video’s Zaranyzerak =).

whoaaa, I don’t …
whoaaa, I don’t agree with Zaranyzerak with everything he says but even I know he isn’t American. If he is the quintessential couch potato, what were you doing when you watched the vid? Running? LOL. Zaranyzerak has a passion and has doing what he loves, which is the goal in life right? Now put down the stones and clean the windows in your glass house.

Blu-ray is cheap as …
Blu-ray is cheap as these days, it’s only a few studios who put out ridiculous RRPs, like Disney.
DVD was good for it’s time, but it’s time to move on. It looks like , and no matter how much you invest in an upconverting player, it’s still gonna look like smeary, blurry , flat coloured crap compared to Blu-ray.

Now off and do …
Now off and do something useful if you’re so concerned about the country. Leaving idiotic comments on YouTube videos doesn’t qualify, sorry. Not my faulty that the rest of us choose to simply live our lives and carry on despite these harsh times, whereas you are apparently immobilized by FEAR and feel the need to lash out at those who are coping better than you with the whole mess. It just burns you up that I’m doing just FINE financially, doing something I enjoy doesn’t it? Good.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:24 am
The fact that you …
The fact that you just called me an American shows how stupid and unobservant you truly are. I am so sick of pseudo-intellectual pompous es like you, thinking you’re so clever with you’re book-learnin’ and big words. The point it, despite the recession, the entertainment industry continues to THRIVE. Why? Because the harder life is, the more people want to escape it. Ergo, people tend to rent and buy more movies on home video during hard times than otherwise.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:24 am
I can’t believe you …
I can’t believe you get so worked up over such trivia. The country is going down the tubes to Socialism. You’re worried about what other people think about Blu-ray prices. Prioritize your life ! You are the quintessential couch potato, sheep American. Prepare to be sheared. Wasteful, sickening, useless !
September 11th, 2009 at 11:24 am
You forgot to …
You forgot to mention that there is 10-12 million Blu players 3 years into its life and DVD only had 4-5 million players 3 years into its life.
With that install base of BD players, studio revenue should be making up for DVD revenue loss TWO TIMES OVER!!
It’s not, and why? NO ONE IS BUYING!!
That’s it, no need for further explanation, no one is buying Blu. You won’t fix it with these “rants”. Sorry.
